The Big Chicken
Local legend and terrifying encounter for D&D 5e based on the landmark in Marietta, Georgia.
As a native of north Atlanta I can personally attest to the importance of The Big Chicken. Situated on the side of US-41 near I-75, it’s a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant with a unique animated statue perched above.
It’s not just a local oddity; it serves as a key navigation point north of the perimeter. For a decade, I had an office in Marietta, and my directions to anyone visiting were simply: "We're on Roswell Road, three miles east of The Big Chicken." Back in the 90s, the owners planned to tear down the landmark when they discovered that years of exposure to pigeon poop made the statue structurally unsound. However, there was such a public outcry that local residents convinced KFC to save the beloved Big Chicken.
In honor of our sublimely surreal statue, I present to you The Big Chicken as reimagined for Dungeons & Dragons.
Big Chicken, Legendary Monstrosity
The Big Chicken is a colossal, terrifying rooster that stands tall among the trees of the primeval forests in which it is sometimes seen. The result of a bizarre arcane experiment conducted by a mad wizard seeking to create poultry that could feed a kingdom, The Big Chicken has outlived its creator by centuries. Its massive, ever-regenerating form boasts a brilliant red plumage and fierce glinting eyes that shine with wrathful intelligence.
The Big Chicken's ceaseless hunger has grown as voracious as its anger over time. It now lurks deep within the wilderness or desolate lands, waiting for its next unsuspecting meal. With a bone-chilling shriek capable of terrifying even the bravest adventurers, The Big Chicken uses its powerful beak and talons to tear apart its foes in a flurry of bloody carnage.
The Big Chicken is a tempting prize for experienced adventurers hoping to carve their names into legend, though so far the only survivors were those wise enough to flee early in the combat. Perhaps the next group of heroes will succeed where so many others have failed.
Encounter: Red Rooster’s Rage
A small but thriving trading village lies along an important crossroad, marked by a strange piece of local statuary—a triangular representation of a huge rooster. Those who pass through usually joke about the big chicken standing tall at the edge of the village. It’s only those who stay and talk to locals that they learn that the statue is a reminder and a warning. Deep within nearby ancient forest lies the hidden lair of a creature spoken of by the villagers only with pure dread—The Big Chicken.
If the adventurers follow the troubled whispers from nearby communities about the terrifying feathered presence in the forest, they uncover a path leading them to a secluded grove, shrouded with an unsettling silence.
As the party explores the eerily quiet forest grove, they find a large clearing with an impressive nest made of shattered and crushed trees. Suddenly, the ground shakes, and with an earth-shattering screech, The Big Chicken appears before them. Its towering form and menacing gaze fill the party with dread, and they realize that taking down this behemoth will be no easy task. Roll initiative!
Tactics
The Big Chicken favors a hit-and-run approach, taking advantage of its speed, regeneration, and powerful attacks to wear down the party. At the beginning of the encounter, the creature is likely to use its Terrifying Shriek, attempting to frighten as many party members as possible and causing disarray.
The Big Chicken will focus primarily on attacking the stronger, melee-oriented targets with its Multiattack – one beak attack and two talon attacks. It avoids getting pinned down in one place, using its land speed or even limited flight to maintain distance from multiple characters. The creature is cunning enough to know spellcasters represent a threat; if it sees an opportunity to attack one, The Big Chicken will strike with brutal force.
Should The Big Chicken's health drop by half (around 160 hit points), it may consider using its Ferocious Flap legendary action to attempt to push back melee attackers and create some space. Quickened Regeneration allows it to keep regain hit points throughout the battle, while occasional Pecks in between can further weaken the party.
During the encounter, emphasize The Big Chicken's relentless nature and formidable power. It will be a constant, looming threat that pushes the party to its limits–a test of their courage, creativity, and resourcefulness.
If it appears that the party may fall, give characters opportunities to escape or rethink their tactics. (The enemy is a big, dumb bird after all.) Whether they succeed in defeating a foe most fowl or turn chicken themselves, the adventurers will never forget their run-in with The Big Chicken.
